Preparing for a Massage 101: How to Get the Most from Your Massage Therapy Session

So you've booked a massage at Vita Wellness, and are ready for some much-needed relaxation. While our stellar massage therapists will create a personalized massage session for your unique needs, there are a few things you can do to ensure you get the most out of your massage therapy session. Read on to see some easy tips for receiving the best massage ever!

1. Jot down pertinent health information.

At your initial appointment, your massage therapist will ask about your wellness goals and overall health. You can prepare by briefly documenting your medical history, physical condition, prescribed medications, lifestyle, occupation, and make sure to communicate any injuries, sensitive areas, and allergies. The more information our massage therapists have, the better they can customize your massage for your health needs.

2. Avoid receiving massage on a full stomach.

Ideally, your session should be scheduled a few hours after a meal, where you're comfortable but not full. Of course, if you're famished beforehand, eat something light that will get you through your session. If you go in feeling stuffed, your body will be working hard to digest food rather than resting.

3. Just before your appointment, take a hot shower.

Warming your muscles makes them more flexible and pliable, so consider taking a hot shower prior to your massage. You'll be expediting the process of loosening knots and releasing metabolic toxins, and you'll ease into a mellow state much faster. For an added dose of relaxation, try using a drop or two of essential oil in your shower in calming scents such as lavender, chamomile, or ylang ylang.

4. Dress comfortably.

Plan to dress in loose clothing or bring a change of clothes with you to change into after your massage. Non-restrictive attire can promote comfort before and after a massage. Just think about wrestling into your tightest jeans after a relaxing massage session - if that doesn't sound appealing, plan your outfit accordingly.

5. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment.

Early arrival gives you adequate time to use the restroom, decompress, and fill out any required paperwork. Rushing to your appointment can increase stress, and being late may even cut into your well-deserved massage time! Arriving early also gives you time to mute your phone to minimize distractions during your session, and let your loved ones know you'll be unreachable for the duration of your massage. Remember, massage time is your time!

6. Convey your preferences.

If a position, room temperature, pressure, or a certain massage stroke is uncomfortable, don't refrain from speaking up. Tell your massage therapist if you dislike the fragrance, body oil, or lotion, and we'll do everything we can to meet your preferences.

7. Prolong the enjoyment.

Massage activates feel-good hormones called endorphins. Afterward, keep them at optimal levels by minimizing stress. Try not to plan an important meeting, a workout or high-energy activities right after your massage. While you may be feeling geared up and recharged after your session, you may also just want to go home and relax. It's also important to drink plenty of water to flush out any toxins released during the massage.
