New Year, Be You: Acknowledging Your Strengths (and Building on Them)

It’s a common practice to set goals and the beginning of a new year. It feels like an opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to make a positive impact on the world around us while becoming physically, mentally, and emotionally healthier than we were the year before.

Unfortunately, when trying to achieve these new goals, many people find themselves in a fight with…well, themselves. If you beat yourself up for your shortcomings, it becomes even harder to bounce back and achieve what you originally set out to achieve.

There is a smarter way to go about setting goals and following through. One reason failure often occurs when setting goals (which generally requires creating new habits) is that the ambitions outweigh their sustainability.

For example, if you say you want to lose 30 pounds this year, the mere thought of it can feel daunting. Instead, set a weekly or monthly goal around new diet and fitness habits to create smaller goals. This way, you’re less likely to burn out or feel overwhelmed.

While having high standards for oneself is an admirable thing, it can also be a setup for disappointment if you don’t set yourself up in a sustainable and realistic way.

If you want to make life changes in 2019, here are some helpful ideas to keep in mind as you move forward:

1. Think about the “why” behind your goals. Before you even decide to move forward with a goal, make sure to explore the “why” behind it and assure that your answer isn’t fueled by the belief that you aren’t good enough. Make your “why” a positive one that is going to enhance yourself and your life. When you know your “why,” it will serve as your greatest source of inspiration when you feel stuck.

2. Take time to think about how to integrate small changes into your overall lifestyle. Think about your daily life right now. What are some small changes you can incorporate into your daily or weekly routine that would help bring you closer to your goals?

3. Little changes can lead to a huge difference. In the long run, bigger isn’t always better. It’s common to overestimate what needs to change about ourselves or our lifestyle to get results. If you make even the smallest change, you’ve already achieved some degree of success, and you may be surprised by the difference it makes.

4. Leverage your strengths instead of battling your weaknesses. When setting your goals and working towards them, acknowledge your strengths and focus on how you can use them to get where you want to go. If you enter the new year with resistance to your own shortcomings, you’re likely to have a more stressful and less successful year.

Whether your goals are wellness related or not, massage therapy can help you feel your best. When you feel good, you’re more likely to succeed in creating what you envision for yourself.

For example, if you want to reduce chronic pain, twice-monthly massages may be best. If your goal is to relax more often, a massage every couple of months could suffice. Vita Wellness knows that everyone is unique, and "regular" massage means something different for everyone.
