The arrival of the Coronavirus has sent shockwaves through our lives. Schools are going online, businesses are ordering employees to work from home, and events are being canceled. Our everyday routines are quickly changing as the world tries to reduce the transmission and spread of COVID-19.
As a massage therapist, you're likely wondering how this will impact your business over the next few months, and you're not alone. Over the past week, businesses such as spas, restaurants, hair salons, and gyms have closed their doors temporarily to reduce the risk of transmission. The ABMB (Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals) has followed suit, and is encouraging massage therapists to consider closing their practice on a short-term, temporary basis.
While this is a stressful, uneasy time in everyone's lives, we encourage you to make the most of the new-found "free time" that you may have over the next few weeks. Read on to see our tips on how to turn this time into one filled with learning, love, and positivity.
1.) Keep Yourself and Your Customers Healthy
First and most importantly, make sure you're following the protocols in place by the CDC and your local government. These are changing every day as we learn more about the spread and characteristics of COVID-19. The most important thing is you and your customer's health and safety, and if that means limiting the number of customers in your practice, taking extra steps to clean your practice, or even closing temporarily, do so.
2.) Take Advantage of Online Learning

3.) Connect With Your Body
This period of uncertainty may understandably lead to stress and anxiety about what's going to happen next. Take time to focus and connect with your body, and try to be in the here and now. Take an online yoga class, listen to a guided meditation, or do other activities that make you connect with your body. Not only can this alleviate stress, it can also lead to immune-boosting benefits, as stress can suppress the immune system.
4.) Keep Calm and Carry On
Whether you're socially distancing or self-quarantining, it can be a lonely time.
Make a cup of tea. Pour a glass of wine. Facetime your family and friends. Play with your dog. Dive into a new book. Catch up on your shows. Try an at-home workout. Clean out your closet. Learn a new dance. Journal. Create a vision board. Nap. Write letters to your friends and family. Watch a funny movie. Burn some incense or a candle. Try to remain calm and use this free time to center yourself, turn inward, and enjoy your own company!
