How to Offer Virtual Education to Your Massage Clients
As a massage therapist, your practice has undoubtedly been turned upside down as a result of the Coronavirus. After all, your work is centered around human touch and interaction.
While your day-to-day work schedule has changed, it's still possible to make money as a massage therapist at this time - you just need to get a bit creative!
A virtual, healthy-habits series can be a great way to stay connected to your clients if you're not seeing clients in-person. Moreover, creating a digital education series, now, can offer you a financial saftey-net for the future too. Thinking even more broadly, an online education series can be a great supplement to your massage service menu- it can add value to any current offerings you may have! It can provide your clients with at-home education, stress relief tips, and support during their day to day life as well as during uncertain times. Check out the steps below to learn how to create a virtual education series that you can offer to new and existing clients.
Big Picture & How it Works:
- You will create (record/go live) some sort of "healthy habit" education.
- You can offer this digital education series as a value-added perk to any pre-existing massage memberhip they have (for example, each month in addition to a 60-minute massage, you'll drop a video in the private FB group with your favorite at-home massage tips)
- you can offer this digital education as an add-on service for ANY client
Get to Work
1) Figure Out What Topics To Cover
Think about what topics to address in this virtual series. What healthy habits were you in conversation with your clients pre COVID? With lots of people stuck at home, there's no doubt some are looking for new ways to de-stress. Some examples of useful topics could be:

2) Pre-Record or Go Live
We recommend using a platform that allows you to easily record videos, share videos, and invite users to your live stream. A private FB group or Zoom are two of the easiest (and free) platforms to get started on.
You have two main options to consider on how to distribute your material
- you can pre-record material (and then share the videos in a private FB group)
- you can go live (FB live or Zoom)
Zoom Account Setup
First, sign up for a Zoom account.
Then, practice making a private zoom meeting (you'll want to invite users via a private link so that you can control who comes to the class.)
Try inviting a couple of friends to a private meeting, and familiarize yourself with the capabilities you’ll have as a meeting host (you can mute others, share your screen if needed, etc) - you don't want to be confused 5 minutes before your virtual class is scheduled to start!
Figure out where you’ll film your class. Is there a cozy corner in your house, or perhaps a spot in your backyard where you can film outdoors? Make sure you choose a spot with good lighting (check out our gear guide below), stable WiFi, and position your phone or laptop's camera in a way that lets viewers clearly hear and see you.
Private Facebook Group Setup
Setting up a private Facebook group is simple! You’ll just need to take the following steps:
Log in to the Facebook account where you’d like to create the group.
Click Create in the top right corner of Facebook and select Group
Enter your group’s name, and privacy options for your group.
Once you create the group, you can add details like a cover photo and description.
4) Figure Out Price & Payment Options
If you want to offer this as a part of your current massage-membership, just roll the cost of this new service into the price of the monthly membership.
If you want to create an "add-on" service with this, consider a flat rate that your customers would enthusiastically say "YES" to! You could even add the virtual series as a new product to your existing booking software. We recommend a price of around $15-$25 for a monthly series. If you are not offering any hands-on services right now and this is a stand-alone offer, figure out a way to keep payments simple and streamlined.
Consider Square & Venmo:
- If you’re using Square already, you can easily customize and create e-invoices to send to your clients.
- If you have a Venmo account, you can easily receive client payments here (you could even offer this as a donation-based service at the start).
5) Create Your Email List
You already have some devoted clients. These people make up your sacred email list. If you've only ever emailed them through your Gmail account, consider simplifying your life and consolidating your emails into one list so you don’t have to manually type emails in every time and your email list is ready to go! Check out Mailchimp’s free business accounts- you have the ability to create email lists of up to 2,000 contacts, so you can send emails to your most loyal customers. Sign up for a free basic Mailchimp account here, and create an audience using the instructions in this guide.
6) Lights, Camera, Action!
If you are pre-recording some "healthy-habits" there's no need to create ALL your video ideas right now. Record one or two and let your clients access them ASAP to get them excited about your new offering. Then, you can "drip" your recorded content to them (in the private FB group or via email) on a daily or weekly basis.
If you're going live with some teachings, decide on a convenient time to go live and stick to it! Send the Zoom meeting link out about 10 minutes before class is scheduled to start so people have time to log on and join. Make sure to record your class so that you can post it in your FB group later and/or send it out as a resource after you're done filming.
- Suggested zoom settings: Make sure you mute all participants at the beginning so that everyone can hear your demonstration, and then open the meeting up for questions at the end. You can also use the Zoom chat feature to gather audience questions during your demonstration.
7) Promote Your Series
Once you've pre-recorded a few videos and/or you're ready to go live, now's the time to inform your clients and get some sign-ups! Send your email subscribers an email with details about your series and how they can sign up to participate, and promote the series on your social channels as well. Encourage your existing customer base to invite their family and friends for a larger reach.
